Placement Tests

Placement Testing

Placement testing is required of all new, transfer, and special students who have been accepted to Gallaudet University.

Like all new students, you will be required to complete an American Sign Language (ASL) Placement Test, but whether you need to take English and Math Placement Tests will depend on your ACT or SAT scores. Scores from Placement Test(s) determine the most appropriate English, math and ASL courses for you.

Even though you have taken the ACT or SAT, there are certain scoring ranges that do not provide sufficient information for appropriate course placement. Unlike the ACT or SAT, the English and Math Placement Tests provide a more microscopic picture of your English and math skills.

Gallaudet’s placement testing coordinator will inform you whether you need to take the English and/or Math Placement Tests. There is no charge for taking any of the Placement Tests. Even though there is no time limit for taking the tests, each test on average takes approximately an hour to complete.

• Reading  (Degrees of Reading Power)–1 hour
• Gallaudet Writing Exam–1 hour
• Math–1 hour
• ASL Placement Test  (required of all students)–45 minutes

Since the tests are offered through your 'my.gallaudet' account, it is critical that you follow the steps outlined in the “Gallaudet User Accounts” document to activate your 'my.gallaudet' account. You will not be able to take the online tests without this activation.

WHEN TO TAKE THE PLACEMENT TESTS
We strongly encourage you to take Placement Tests before you arrive for the New Student Orientation (NSO) in August but not earlier than March.  Early testing will allow you to get your class schedule before NSO.  In some states,  the Vocational Rehabilitation agency, requires a copy of course schedule before they will grant financial support.

From your home, school, nearest public library or cyber cafe
All the placement tests are online and available from any computer in the world connected to the Internet. You may take these tests any time you wish. You must complete any individual test or part of the ASL test in one sitting, but you don't need to complete all the tests on the same day. If you have a slow connection, the ASL test may be hard to follow.

At Gallaudet - during individual visit to the campus
In some situations, arrangements may be made to take your Placement Tests during your spring or summer visit to the campus prior to NSO week.  Please email the placement testing coordinator at placement.testing@gallaudet.edu for an appointment.

At Gallaudet–Week of NSO
If you haven't taken the Placement Tests prior to NSO week, you will be expected to take it on NSO arrival day.
