Scope

This policy applies to staff in all offices and divisions of Gallaudet University unless specifically covered by collective bargaining agreements made between Gallaudet University and certified bargaining agents.

Policy

In general, all offices at the University are expected to be open and operational eight hours per day, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

All full-time non-exempt employees are expected to work eight hours per day (lunch breaks are not paid), five days per week. All full-time exempt employees are expected to work the number of hours and days necessary to perform the job satisfactorily, defined as minimally eight hours per day (lunch breaks are not paid), five days per week.

Supervisors are responsible for establishing or approving work hours which provide for the effective delivery of services. Individual work schedules may vary as long as:

  • All offices are open and operational between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • All full-time employees work eight hours per day, five days per week, Monday through Friday (unless working a non-standard work week).
  • All full-time employees are present between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (unless working a non-standard work week).

A non-standard work week may be established to provide services in certain critical areas. Shifts and hours of work are determined by the supervisor. Full-time employees following a non-standard work week are expected to work eight hours per day, five days per week.

It may be necessary from time to time to call a non-exempt employee into work outside of his/her regular work schedule. Should this occur, the employee receives a minimum of four hours of pay. The four-hour minimum does not apply to employees who are asked to report to work early or remain at work late if these hours directly conjoin the regular working hours, to those who voluntarily attend on campus meetings or events, or to those who must return because of their own negligence. Any overtime resulting from a non-exempt employee being called into work follows the University's overtime payment practices.

The University may, at its discretion, reduce, increase, or change an employee's work schedule to accommodate workloads, budget constraints, or other circumstances.
