Online Course Expectations and Commitment
Our American Sign Language classes are based on interactive teaching, learning, and communication. In order to take full advantage of the learning that transpires, students are expected to manage and direct their academic progress with support and guidance from their instructor. Our online courses are immersion courses; they are self-paced and are not the “softer, easier way”! Deadlines have been set to ensure that you have adequate time to complete all assignments within the current session. Active participation is required. Viewings, assignments and activities are posted online and students are required to log in to submit video assignments electronically and participate in course discussions through video. Students are expected to have basic computer and Internet literacy, and are responsible for obtaining their own Internet access and web camera.

ASL Placement Screening
ASL classes at Gallaudet University may not be equivalent to classes you have taken at other locations. To ensure that you are placed in the class that best meets your needs, review the course descriptions and select the one that seems to fit your current skill level.  For more information, see ASL Placement Screening.

Practice "Netiquette:" Be polite and respectful in your postings (no "flaming" or posting/sending negative, hurtful comments to others); Use appropriate ASL grammar and correct syntax, and wear appropriate clothing and background.  In short, present your best self!

The ASL Program faculty and staff will be committed to you by providing discussions through e-mails, videophone, or other type of video chat. It is imperative that students communicate with the instructor when not satisfied, confused, or unclear about information. Students will be required to submit video assignments showing their use of ASL that includes facial grammatical markers, hand movement, and use of space.

At Gallaudet, we use Blackboard to support our online courses. The first thing you need to do is to make sure you have the right equipment. See the minimum computing guidelines to find out what you need. Then to gauge your online learning readiness, complete this brief Online Learning Readiness Inventory. Your responses will help identify strengths and weaknesses for success in the online learning environment.
