Roxanne Hughes-Wheatland, Ph.D., currently works full time as a psychologist in Baltimore, Maryland at an institute that specializes in providing services to individuals with neurological and developmental impairments.

Roxanne  completed her practicum for the Master of Arts in International Development at the nongovernmental organization, Partners of the Americas (POA). POA has a history of supporting programs for people with disabilities in Latin America and the Caribbean. During her practicum, Roxanne conducted a study of POA disability related programs and documented the information in a database that the organization can now use to monitor the programs' outcomes. She presented the results of her research November 21st at the Higher Education and International Volunteer Service Conference in Washington, D.C.

"My reason for studying international development is to prepare to work in Latin America and/or the Caribbean on a development project that focuses on developing opportunities for children who have disabilities to contribute to their communities."

Roxanne completed her internship with the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP) organization where she worked alongside the staff at CASP to learn how they implement their unique strategies related to full community integration of individuals with disabilities in Perú. She collected data related to a study she developed with the help of Dr. Sharon Barnartt from Gallaudet. The study is entitled "The Impact of Participation in the Intensive School for Families at Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú on Parenting Stress and Parents' Positive Perceptions of Children with Developmental Disabilities."

Roxanne wrote,
"As a result of what I have learned in the International Development program at Gallaudet University, I now see my place in the developing world with respect to people with disabilities,  in a much broader context.  Not as one who is prepared to help, but as one who is prepared to provide support by sharing and learning from others."
