Short Biography

Sharon Barnartt is Program Coordinator and Professor of Sociology in the Department of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Sociology at Gallaudet University, where she has taught since 1980.

She has co-authored two books:

  • Deaf President Now: The 1988 Revolution at Gallaudet University (1995)
  • Disability Protests: Contentious Politics 1970-1999 (2000)

She has also co-edited:

  • International Views on Disability Measures: Moving toward Comparative Measurement (Research in Social Science and Disability)
  • Using Survey Data to Study Disability: Results from the National Health Interview Survey on Disability
  • Exploring Theories and Expanding Methodologies: Where We Are and Where We Need To Go
  • Expanding the Scope of Social Science Research on Disability
  • Disability Studies Quarterly, Special Issue on Deafness, volume 18(2), 1998
  • Journal of Disability Policy Studies: Special Issue on Women and Disability, volume 8, 1997.

She is currently:

  • Co-editing Research in Social Science and Disability
  • Serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Disability Policy Studies and other disability-related journals.

Dr. Barnartt has presented papers and published widely in the areas of gender differences in socio-economic status, disability policy issues, social movements in the deaf and disability communities, and disability in developing countries. From 1989-1990 she had a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship at the University of Zimbabwe. At Gallaudet, she was named a Distinguished Faculty Member in 1998 and received the Schaefer Professorship for Outstanding Research, 2005-2006.

She has been a board member and president of the Society for Disability Studies as well as member and Chair of the American Sociological Association's Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.
