The Results! Mentoring Program at Gallaudet University

Results! Mentoring is a program of mentoring activities housed within Gallaudet Interpreting Service which supports development of mentoring skills and which fosters development of interpreting expertise. The purpose of the Results! Mentoring program is to foster the skill development of interpreters through individualized support, guided experience, and skill development activities in order to meet demands for high quality services on the Gallaudet campus and nationwide.

GIS Results! Mentoring Programs:

Discussion Groups - Special Topics

Discussion groups are classroom like settings with a set curriculum aimed at preparing interpreters for national or specialty certifications. Interpreters meet for 1.5 hours on a weekly basis to discuss weekly readings, vocabulary, and training materials. (Typically discussion groups are held on Fridays from 3:30-5:00). These groups meet for an entire semester. The topic of the study group is contingent on the Results! Visiting Interpreter program topics for each year.

Requirements

  • Currently working with GIS as a staff or freelance interpreter
  • Availability to attend all sessions (check with mentoring coordinator about specific time and location)

One-on-One Mentoring

One-on-one mentoring sessions are face-to-face meetings occurring through an academic semester or year. Mentors and mentees are paired and work together on specific development goals and complete regular mentoring logs. Both mentor and mentee earn CEUs by completing Independent Study paperwork and submitting it to the PDC

Requirements

  • Current MAI students, GIS staff, and visiting interpreters
  • Completion of mentoring application and selection into the program

 

Mentor Development/Training

Mentor Development involves one-on-one sessions with mentors and members of the GIS Mentoring Team to improve mentoring proficiency.  Mentors film samples of their mentoring sessions with mentees, and review these films with members of the mentoring team. Mentor refresher training is offered quarterly as a workshop session.  Please contact the mentoring team at gis.mentoring@gallaudet.edu for future training dates and registration information.

Skills Conference

Developed by Carolyn Ressler, Diana Markel and Amanda Mueller, and piloted by GIS staff interpreters, a skills conference is an opportunity for 3 interpreters to engage in feedback and dialogue about their interpreting work. Each member of the triad films a live sample of their interpreting work and completes a self-assessment of the sample. This sample and self-assessment is then shared with the other members of the triad for feedback and discussion. Each member of the triad takes a turn. Sessions are typically 1.5 hours three to four times per semester, usually during times when work demands are lower.

Requirements

  • Currently working with GIS as a staff or freelance interpreter
  • Completion of an application/availability

Visiting Interpreter Program

The visiting interpreter program is a 9-month mentoring experience where interpreters work full-time on campus in order to reach the next level in their interpreting career. Individuals in this program participate in one on one mentoring sessions, teamed assignments, weekly discussion group sessions, training workshops, and observations. Both out of town and local applicants are accepted.
