Brenda Nicodemus
Short Biography

Brenda Nicodemus is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Interpretation at Gallaudet University and the Director of Gallaudet's Interpretation and Translation Research Center (ITRC). She has interpreted professionally since 1989 and holds a PhD in Educational Linguistics from the University of New Mexico and an MA in Linguistics from Indiana University, Bloomington. From 2007-2011, Dr. Nicodemus worked as a Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Neuroscience  at San Diego State University. Dr. Nicodemus collaborated on the development of a website that defines linguistic terminology in International Sign ( She has taught interpreting at various postsecondary institutions and has presented both nationally and internationally.

Her publications include Prosodic Markers and Utterance Boundaries in American Sign Language Interpreting (Gallaudet University Press, 2009) and, with co-editor Laurie Swabey, Advances in Interpreting Research (Benjamins, 2011). Brenda Nicodemus and Melanie Metzger will soon release a co-edited volume titled Investigations in Healthcare Interpreting (Gallaudet University Press, 2014).  


Dr. Nicodemus' research focuses on two strands: the psycholinguistic processes of bimodal bilinguals, i.e., individuals who know languages with two distinct modalities (spoken and signed languages) and interpreting in the healthcare setting. Her areas of study include translation asymmetry in bimodal bilinguals, direct vs. mediated discourse in healthcare settings, and comparative analysis of spoken and signed language interpretation.
