Advancing Institutional Equity through Multicultural Transformation

From Tuesday, September 16 through Friday, September 19, Gallaudet University will host a series of events focusing on transforming Gallaudet in terms of multicultural awareness and integration into our academic curriculum and community dialogues.

The theme of these events is, "Advancing Institutional Equity through Multicultural Transformation."

On the agenda are four open forums, guided by professional facilitators to explore various options as we begin the search for a new Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). Discussions will include charge of responsibility, oversight, and organizational structure within the Office of the CDO. The first of the four forums will be held on Tuesday, September 16.

On Wednesday, September 17, there will be a series of panel sessions by full time faculty and Clerc Center teachers who were selected as Multicultural Educational Fellows for last June's Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute (MCTI). The MCTI was designed as an intensive graduate level advanced professional development seminar for Gallaudet faculty and Clerc Center teachers interested in comprehensively transforming the core courses they teach in multiculturally discipline- and academic level-specific manners in order to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes, as well as the overall quality of teaching and learning, across the curriculum.

Rounding out the week will be a two-day conference entitled "Educating for Equity and Excellence: Multicultural Transformation Across the Curriculum" and will feature nationally renowned keynote speakers, workshops, and concurrent sessions focused on implementing Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) 3.

The campus community is encouraged to participate in these events as much as possible. Transforming multiculturalism is an important initiative in our Student Learning Outcomes as well as for our day-to-day interactions as a community.

Students in need of special interpreting services should contact Bonnie Simmons, bonnie.simmons@gallaudet.edu to make arrangements.
